Besalu

Besalu Medieval Festival

We were delighted to find that we were nearby for the annual medieval festival in the the town of Basalu. This was an important town in the early middle ages and has been quite well preserved - especially the old bridge from the 12th century. The festival is held over 3 days. We arrived early on the first day. By our standards it was not at all crowded. Several of the local shop owners dress up in medieval costume and there are lots of activities organised.

There were bands, parades and street performers.

A simple but delicious lunch of local sausage and toasted bread that you can spread as you wish.

These belly dancers did a great show. See how the one below could contort herself - all the while being graceful.

A medieval play with lots of goodies and baddies. Not too hard to follow even though it was in Catalan.

Roasting a cow on a big spit.

A falconry display. Interesting to see the birds but their being tethered was not so good.
