Castelfollit de la Roca

Castelfollit de la Roca

Can you imagine living on this cliffside? Well John and Liz's daughter Judith does. It's an amazing house - at least 200 years old. It's in Castelfollit - a town of about 1000 people living in 1 square kilometre. It is a 50 metre high basalt cliff and some of the houses, as you can see, are literally built on the edge of it.

Judith bought her house after had it been badly remodelled somewhat in the 1960s and has done a fantastic renovation. The house is on 3 levels. Originally the bottom floor was for the cattle, the middle for living and the top for storing straw.

The top floor is now an open living area with great views from the terrace outside.

                                                      Time for coffee.

Narrow streets along the cliff top.

A charming local girl who knew Liz was happy to pose for us.

There is ever the perennial washing to be done.

Every village in the area has giants like these, all different though, used in festivals. Someone can get in them and they form part of parades through the streets. These ones are stored in the museum above which used to be the old church on the edge of the cliff.

This is one of the houses that has not been renovated where the roof has fallen into disrepair.

The land at the bottom of the cliff is alluvial and of course used to grow crops.
