The Seine

The Seine

Wandering along the Seine or cruising along in a boat is great fun in summertime. There is just so much to see and do. Here's some of it.

Children's play grounds - you'd love this Susannah.

Bikes to rent and ride and deposit at another stand. Cheaper if you ride uphill and leave them at Montmartre.

Some sort of film shoot with the girl in blue taking a card out of a box and reading it. Not sure of the one in green's role but she was there too.

Lots of house boats moored near the Tuileries Garden. Quite a location.

A little difficult to see but skate boarding

                                                                     or just relaxing

Visiting a temporary glasshouse and gardens

Maybe an organised exercise class

Or would the beach be better?
Since 2002 some edges of the Seine are converted into beaches for 5 weeks in the summer. Sand is brought in and Oh La La there it is. Good for young and old.

Parisians love to picnic in summer. We saw them doing it on the pavement outside their shops and elegantly by the river - or when space ran out the sidewalk above would be fine.

In the nearby Place des Vosges you can relax on the grass or get cool in a fountain.

Boat Trip

We took a boat trip. Not a smart one where you get dinner but just the trip with Vedettes du Pont Neuf. We got a voucher as part of our walk with Discover Walks so paid 5.50 Euro instead of the usual 13.50 Euro. It was not crowded and we had good views.

Notre Dame from the river and the Eiffel Tower in all it's splendour.

This statue sits in the Seine by the Pont de l'Alma. It is off a Zouave (type of French soldier). It is renowned because locals use it to tell the level of the Seine. If it's feet are covered the embankment is closed if it covers his thighs the river is not navigable. In big floods in 1910 the river reached his shoulders. Maybe not scientifically accurate but a good guide.

We were told this semi circle window above belongs to one of Paris's most famous and expensive restaurants - La Tour d'Argent. Apparently you need to book months or maybe years in advance. Can you imagine?

We even saw salsa dancing - a regular Sunday activity - from the boat.

And a beautiful sunset on the way back to the apartment.
