A sailing perspective

I am learning a lot about myself on this trip. I have never been very interested or exposed to sailing and have certainly seen it as a way of getting somewhere. Now I am learning to enjoy the journey and it is fun. Whiling away the hours with good company, watching the sea, clouds, occasional birds and twice dolphins is wonderful. We are only able to sail without a hired skipper because of Peter's expertise. Lots of boats have skippers that do a lot of the work. This means that we all need to pitch in and help, take turns steering and helping while docking. It can be a bit daunting but I love it. Now I know this is not real sailing in the sense that it is usually calm so I'm not making any great claims to be a real sailor on the high seas but the insight into this world is great - one  I know many of you have already - thinking of you Liz and Tony.
There are about 1100 islands in the Adriatic and we are in the central area in Croatia. This is a part of the world that I have never learnt much about. Their rich history culturally and also strategic importance over the ages has been lost on me until now. We have seen fortifications built during the second world war and damage from the war between the Serbs and Croats just 20 years ago.
We have been mooring in lovely little ones like Vis or sometimes in lovely isolated coves and fending for ourselves in very peaceful surroundings. I found the fact that we were not sailing with a definite destination in mind a little challenging at first but now like pottering along looking at the charts and deciding what might be good. In some bays there are a few houses with small restaurants serving not many people but good food.
One good thing about sailing for me. When we berth where there are showers because there are are a lot more men than women sailing I can walk straight into the women's showers and it's the guys that have to wait. Finally justice in the world in this regard!
